The Impact of Technology on Living with Low Vision
Abstract:

For people with vision loss, technology advances over the last several decades have dramatically improved the accessibility to information, enabled greater independence, and opened doors to employment. This talk will discuss and demonstrate several high-tech hardware and software tools and the technologies behind them. In addition, other less technologically advanced aids will be discussed that might be helpful for those with more moderate vision loss.

Bio:

Dr. Peter Torpey received his PhD. in Engineering Physics from the University of Virginia in 1979 and worked at Xerox Corporation for over 25 years. As a Research Fellow at Xerox, he developed computer models of ink-jet printers, managed a team of image-processing scientists that was responsible for optimizing print quality, and worked on design concepts for new products. He is now retired but continues his long involvement in the Xerox Science Consultant Program and co-hosts a weekly radio program about products, services and daily living tips for the visually impaired. He also beta tests accessibility devices and software for the blind. His jazz trio plays around town in senior homes and cafés. He's been blind since birth.

Dr. Nancy Goodman Torpey received her PhD. in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1981 and worked at Xerox Corporation for 23 years. As a Principal Scientist, she developed computer models of xerographic printers, explored the limits of human visual perception and how it relates to print quality requirements, and managed a group of process physics scientists. She is now retired but continues her long involvement in the Xerox Science Consultant Program and co-hosts a weekly radio program about products, services and daily living tips for the visually impaired. She is also active with the Genesee Land Trust working to preserve open space in and around Monroe and Wayne County. She can see.
