Speech technologies and mobile services have arrived – and they are
perfect together. At first glance, speech is an attractive complement to
the small form factor of mobile devices, and how they are used – for
example, while driving or searching the web. Meanwhile, the unprecedented
bandwidth available to mobile devices makes it possible to run speech in
the cloud, side-stepping device dependent issues, such as software
management, limited processing and battery life. The union of speech and
cloud computing is changing the ecosystem of the speech technology
industry. New licensing models are emerging, novel partnerships are being
formed, and the role of vendors, operators and developers are being
redefined. Perhaps most importantly, speech-in-the-cloud with open APIs
unlocks the talents of the best and brightest innovators, enabling them to
create new and exciting multimodal mobile services. Recent AT&T
innovations available to all include our Watson-based speech mashups
platform, speaker verification technology and Natural Voices voice
builder. In this talk, I will give a tour of speech technology research
at AT&T from the early days to the present, and demo some of the
technologies available to our research partners.
