Getting Students Hooked on CS
Most students complete their K-12 education with no concept of what
computer science is or how it could fit in to their future endeavors.
Early exposure to the field in an engaging, challenging context can
help drive talented students into our college programs. I will talk
about my experiences working with K-12 students in computer science
and the different ways that universities can help support this
important work. I will also discuss University of Washington's Back
to Basics approach to CS1 and CS2 which has helped build record
enrollments (25% of undergrads or about 1800 students a year) and
bring in more women (30%).
Bio: Hélène Martin spent the last two years building up a computer science
program in a public high school in the Seattle area. She is now back
at her alma mater, University of Washington, as a lecturer for the
introductory programming courses. She also helps support K-12
computer science programs in the Puget Sound area.
