IIT Mandi: The Only IIT in the Himalayas
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have earned a reputation over the past 50-60 years for their excellence in teaching and research in science and technology. Given the vast expansion in demand for high-quality technology universities in India, in 2008 and 2009, 8 new IITs were started to join the existing 7 IITs. The newest of these is IIT Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. It has the distinction of being the only IIT in the majestic Himalayas.

In the short span of 3 years since the first students were admitted, IIT Mandi has made rapid strides towards becoming a full-fledged member of the IIT system. We will present the vision of IIT Mandi, and the strategies that we are following to achieve this in the new milieu of the 21st century. To realise the potential, to build a world-class institution in a remote Himalayan river valley, we face many challenges. We will describe these and how we overcome them to offer unique opportunities for faculty and students.
