Technology for Pervasive Computing
For the past 20 years, the pervasive computing community has developed technology that allows sensing, computing, and wireless communication to be embedded in everyday objects, from cell phones to running shoes, enabling a range of context-aware applications. While these apps are useful, the time has come to develop the next generation of pervasive computing systems. These future systems will support applications that have much deeper awareness of users and their activities, context, and goals. They will be able to learn and adapt continuously to user’s habits, routines, and preferences. These future apps will be capable of supporting complex tasks, such as cooking a soufflé or building a complicated piece of furniture. In the process, they will deliver far richer user experiences than the technologies of today can offer. The Intel Science and Technology Center for Pervasive Computing (ISTC-PC) will develop the fundamental technologies needed to power this next generation of pervasive computing systems. This talk highlights the key research themes and application areas that will drive the research of the new center.

BIO: Mark Abel is the Intel Principal Investigator for the Intel Science and Technology Center for Pervasive Computing. Prior to this role, Mark was a longtime lab director at Intel. Most recently Mark was the founding director of the lab in Intel’s Software and Services Group where he guided Intel’s Context and Sensor Aware Computing applied research and first product developments. During his time at Intel,Mark’s lab teams have won or shared Intel’s highest honor, the Intel Achievement Award, seven times for the creation of new technologies and new businesses for Intel including the invention and delivery of technologies that have shipped in over a billion PCs. Prior to joining Intel, Mr. Abel held research and leadership positions with Bell Labs, Xerox PARC, U S WEST Advanced Technologies and Siemens. He is the author/co-author of over 20 journal and conference papers including several frequently cited works in the Computer Supported Cooperative Work literature. Mark has an MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
