Quantifying the Personal Creative Experience: Psychometrics & Psychological Sensors
Creativity is revered because of its relationship to both the economic concepts of innovation and growth, but also to more personal concepts of well-being and psychological flourishing. In this capacity, digital creativity support tools (CSTs) have the ability to support people's creativity across a spectrum of activities, including artistic and scientific creativity. While there is an extensive history of evaluating productivity support tools in HCI, there are no convenient and straightforward methods for evaluating CSTs. In this talk, I present several quantitative evaluation metrics that I have developed for the purpose of creativity support tool evaluation, including a psychometric tool called the Creativity Support Index and a physiological sensor data approach using EEG and machine learning to detect moments of high creative experience. In more recent work, I have also applied physiological measurements and machine learning to behavior modification in health, and thus, I will also briefly discuss my future research in this area.
Bio: Erin Carroll is a PhD Candidate in Computing & Information Systems at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and also has an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Cognitive Science. Her research is situated in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), particularly within physiological computing, affective computing, and pervasive computing.
