Paper Study - Achieving Non-Inclusive Cache Performance with Inclusive Caches
Inclusive cache offers simpler cache coherence protocol but it suffers from degraded performance compared to non-inclusive and exclusive caches. The major reason is the lack of awareness of the last level cache (LLC) about the locality of the lines in the core caches. To overcome this problem and achieve non-inclusive performance, the paper proposes three methods for temporal locality-aware cache management policy - Temporal Locality Hints (TLH), Early Core Invalidation (ECI), and Query Based Selection (QBS). Evaluations are performed on all three methods and contrasted with non-inclusive cache performance. Finally, the paper shows that the performance of QBS is close to that of non-inclusive cache.
