CSC Students Excel at Putnam Mathematical Competition

A student math team from the University of Rochester finished in the top three percent in the recent William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition.

The team—made up of senior Xiaoqing Tang, sophomore Vincent Yu, and freshman Douglas Miller—finished 15th among 460 teams.

Xiaoqing (Sean) Tang '12 and Douglas Miller '15 are both double majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics.  Vincent Yu is a MTH major with a CSC minor.

CS Undergrads win HSEAS Pumpkin Design Contest for 2nd year

On Friday, 10/28, the Hajim School of Engineering held their second annual Pumpkin Design Contest during the October E-Social held in Goergen Hall.  Representatives from each department carved pumpkins with a design that reflected their discipline.  CSC's students Jon Hinkel and Xu Wang were judged to be the winners based on the current events theme of their pumpkin, dubbed "The Ghost of Steve Jobs".  Last year our winning pumpkin entry was a Scribbler Robot that danced to the Monster Mash. Prestigious Scholarship awarded to Riley '12 by Astronaut Ed Gibson '59

Keesom '08 awarded U.S. DHS Security Career Development Fellowship

Jeff Keesom graduated from URCS in '08, and completed a Masters in Software Engineering at RIT the following year.  Currently, he is attending Syracuse University where he is pursuing a combined law degree and Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs, with a Certificate in Security Studies.

Darcey Riley '12 named Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Scholar

Rising senior Halley Orshan '12 (known in URCS as Darcey Riley) has been chosen one of the national winners of the 2011-2012 Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Scholar.  Students throughout the STEM disciplines at the University of Rochester were nominated by their department chairs and a committee lead by Undergraduate Research Director Steven Manly selected two nominees from Rochester for the national competition.  Darcey will receive $10,000, which will be presented to her this fall on campus by a yet unnamed astronaut.  Further details of the astronaut's visit, talk an

Halpern '12 elected SA President

UR CS major Bradley Halpern was elected as President of the student government for the 2011-2012 academic year.  Bradley is the second CSC major to hold that office.  Previously, Meng Zhu Wang held the office for the 2001-2002 academic year. 

Rochester wins 1st Place at CS Games in Montreal

Two teams of CS undergraduates chose to spend the beginning of their spring break, from March 4-6th, competing in Montreal, Canada in the CS Games.

Kollar receives best student paper award at ICMI-2010

Tom Kollar (BS - '04)  earned the distinction of Best Student Paper at the International Conference on Multimodal Interfaces in Beijing, China this month.  Kollar's paper is entitled "Grounding Spatial Language for Video Search".  Tom is currently a Ph.D. candidate at MIT.

CSUG wins First Annual HSEAS Pumpkin Design Contest

Congratulations to CSC undergraduates (Robin Miller, Adina Rubinoff, Josh Pawlicki, David Klein and Rintaro Kuwoira) who put together the winning entry in the First Annual HSEAS Pumpkin Design contest.  The CSC pumpkin won both categories - "Most Creative" and "Best Representation of the Discipline" for their pumpkin.
