CD/DVD Writer

CD/DVD Writer

Introduction

There is a CD/DVD writer in the Vision lab on the PC named Vivid. Vivid is one of the group of machines connected to the single terminal closest to the VR lab.
NOTE: While the hardware is capable of burning DVDs, the current software is not. Upgrade (info available below) as necessary.

How to burn a CD

Summary: From Vivid, open up the Easy Creator 5 shortcut on the desktop. Follow the instructions to select the files, then burn the CD.
  1. Login to Vivid.
  2. A number of machines share the same monitor and keyboard, so you must first select vivid by pressing the "print screen" (PrtScn) key and selecting vivid, which is the Windows machine. Login.

Note: if this is your first time logging in to a Windows machine in the Vision lab, you will need to register your password, which you can do on hammerhead, the other Windows machine in the lab.
  3. Open the EasyCD software.
  4. Use the shortcut on the desktop (or Programs/Roxio Easy CD Creator 5/Applications/Easy CD Creator) Accept the terms of the license.
  5. Choose "Make a data CD/Data CD Project"
  6. This creates versatile CDs that can be read by various operating systems.
  7. Insert a blank CD in the drive
  8. Select the files you want to add to the CD
  9. First select the network drive (e.g. heart). Navigate the directory structure in the top windows to find the files you want. Drag the desired files to the bottom region (or select them and press "add"). You can undo mistakes by selecting the undesirable file added and pressing "Remove".
  10. Record the CD
  11. Press the bright red "Record" button. Then accept the default options.
  12. Wait until it completes
  13. A full CD (600+ MB) can take over 7 minutes.
  14. Close out of the program, remove CD, and logout
  15. It will ask you if you want to save the CD project, which allows it to remember which files you put on the CD. Say no (unless you are going to make another copy-or one using the same files).
  16. Logout

Hardware Documentation

  1. What pieces of the hardware do we have? For each major piece of the hardware, what is the piece's manufacturer, model name, serial# and UofR Property code#?
  2. Model: Philips-D01 DWD+RW
    Serial: ???
    Driver version: 5.0.2183.1
  3. What are important urls, addresses, phones and emails for the piece?
  4. Hardware: http://www.consumer.philips.com/
  5. What do the pieces look like? Photograph the hardware that we actually have. Do not swipe photos from manufacturer's sites. There are numerous digital cameras throughout the department. If you need help ask either Brian or me. You should acquire photos of each piece disconnected from the rest of the hardware and photos of the hardware connected together (an overview photo of the whole ensemble and detailed photos of each connection). Be especially sure to procure a good photo of each information plate and interface (i.e., an interface is a connector on the piece). Many pieces should be photographed from multiple viewpoints.
  6. What documentation already exists for each piece and where is it located (urls, location of hardcopy manuals, etc.,)?
  7. User's guides:
In Start menu/Programs/User's Guides/, there are guides for:
    Philips DVD/CD (C:\DELL\DOCS\0J792\INDEX.HTM)
The documentation is *more* than sufficient for technical details (e.g., the substrate material, reflectance properties, and eccentricity!)
    It has five functions in one drive: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+RW.
Features (taken from the above documentation): DVD+RW Drive
    Highest Speed 2.5X DVD+RW Write, 12/10/32X CD-R/RW
Equipped with JustLinkTM, original buffer-under-run prevention technology
Legacy DVD-ROM and CD Player can play CD-R and CD-RW media
Legacy CD-ROM and CD Player can play CD-R and CD-RW Media (CD-Rom and CD Player requires Multi-Read function to play CD-RW Media).
    Audio Extraction at 32X
Support Random Write UDF in DVD+RW
