About:

Andy is in his third year of the Computer Science Ph.D. program at the University of Rochester. Andy is also an Air Force officer, who will be assigned as a professor at the Air Force Institute of Technology upon completion of his Ph.D. His outside interests include his family, politics, theology, painting, and music--just an all-around Renaissance man!

Research Interests:

My research interests include Spatial Intelligence, Computer Vision, and Machine Learning. I am particularly interested in the perceptual grounding of natural language. My thesis is part of a larger effort to create spatially intelligent machines capable of interacting with humans in the physical rather than virtual world. My thesis is focused on the perceptual basis for spatial relations. (i.e. English prepositions like 'on', 'in', 'near', 'above', 'behind', 'across', 'around', etc.) I'm seeking to identify and combine key visual features to recognize a wide variety of relations in a realistic 3-D environment, without using geometric models of the objects or environment.

Projects:

Perceptual Basis of Spatial Relations: We seek to visually recognize the spatial relations between objects in a 3-D realistic environment, using an interaction-based approach that identifies a small high-leverage set of visual features.
