About:Brian is a lab technician for the URCS Vision group's Virtual Reality lab headed by Dana Ballard and Mary Hayhoe. His research interests include eye movements, visual memory. He is also interested in the application of machine learning techiniques to study cognition, memory, and neural encoding. | |
Research Interests:Within the department I have several interests and opportunities to work on a variety of projects that primarily involve the study of vision via human behavioral studies or through computational methods. Generally the research seeks to break down human behavior into its smallest components in time to try and understand how neural reactions on the order milliseconds translate into conscious perception which is on the order of seconds. By decomposing behavior and examining the discrete nature of vision our research seeks to understand the highly task based nature of this sensory system and to understand the interplay of top down and bottom up mechanisms involved in sensory processing. Within psychology I am also interested in the neural and chemical foundations of behavior and their implications on the philosophy of mind. Outside of our lab's research I am also interested in self organizing and emergent systems that exhibit complex behaviors based on the interactions of simple rules. I hope to someday apply this and other machine learning techniques to musical composition. | |
Projects:Examining Task Context and Prior Knowledge During Naturalistic Tasks: Little is known regarding what visual information is selected and retained when guiding behavior. We test the hypothesis that acquisition and retention of visual information is governed by task relevance. Preliminary data suggests that immediate task demands govern the precise composition of visual working memory, the contents of which may be aggregates of task relevant features.Behavioral Effects of Varying Eye, Head, and Hand Temporal Coordination Sequences in a Natural Task: This experiment seeks to examine the role of planning or "look ahead" fixations in natural tasks and how the scene information transferred across saccades may influence eye, hand, and head coordination. | |
