About:Neil is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Visual Science at the University of Rochester. He researches our use of vision in the real world; in the firm belief that we could only have evolved through behaviour that conferred an evolutionary advantage. He believes that our behaviour is therefore an important factor in deploying vision, and that our behavioural goals may well be important in mechanisms of perception and cognition. Paradoxically, in the real world there are few things that keep him interested for long. | |
Research Interests:My current research is into the way we use eye movements to extract different visual information from the environment when we are performing everyday tasks. I also feel it is important to study visuo-motor co-ordination in the real world, as this work may shed further light on the way we allocate attention and use memory during action in the real world. My focus is on how the immediate motor task that we are currently performing influences the deployment of the visual system. However, I am also currently running experiments that investigate visual fixations onto relevant objects ahead of the current task, as these may well be important in the planning and successful completion of future behavioural goals and actions. This work would also shed further light on the nature of visual representations carried across fixations, and would challenge many of the current models on visual processing. | |
Projects:Behavioral Effects of Varying Eye, Head, and Hand Temporal Coordination Sequences in a Natural Task: This experiment seeks to examine the role of planning or "look ahead" fixations in natural tasks and how the scene information transferred across saccades may influence eye, hand, and head coordination. | |
