Phone Stuff

Several people have asked me about using their office phones for things like speaker phone or conference calling. The following are some links and hints. Please feel free to edit this topic and add your own (or correct mine).

Just like your office phone, dialing out from 703 requires "9" for a local call. And dialing toll calls (long distance, not toll-free 800/888) requires an access code.

For a conference call in 703 using the "spaceship" speakerphone, the following basic instructions are from Kai Shen via JoMarie Carpenter:

  1. Call first person, ask them to hold.
  2. Press FLASH
  3. Call next person, ask them to hold.
  4. Repeat 2 & 3 until everyone has been called.
  5. Press FLASH to bring everyone together.

Again, I believe it is not possible to setup a conference call where multiple parties can call in themselves (without using a service like ReadyConference.

Outgoing Caller ID

Using the ANI feature on the University telephone system: When dialing a number external to the University, begin the dial sequence with a star ( * ). This will send your individual telephone number to the business or person that you are calling. An example: If your University extension is x51234, using the ANI feature, the number that the called party will see is 585-275-1234.
