(push "/usr/grads/share/emacs/site-lisp/" load-path)
(load "auctex.el")
(load "preview-latex.el" nil t t)

Set the environment variable

export TEXINPUTS=.::/usr/grads/share/texmf/tex//

before you start emacs (so latex can find the preview package when it is called by emacs). Then fire up emacs and open a latex file. You will see
