Printing From Linux

In general

1. Jobs are queued with the lpr command or other tool that supports printing (okular, firefox, ghostscript, etc).
2. Print queues are displayed using the lpq command
3. Duplexing and transparency trays are now handled correctly.
4. There are options for n-up printing and other printing features.
5. View general printing policies
6. You must set the environment variable CUPS_SERVER=print.cs.rochester.edu or CUPS_SERVER=print.csug.rochester.edu in order to print or view the print queues.

Queuing Print Jobs
Jobs are queued using the lpr command or via your favorite tool that supports printing. The following queues have been predefined. You can set your default printer by setting the PRINTER environment variables to one of the predefined queues

  • shake - duplex/two sided printing 6th floor
  • dali - duplex/two sided color printing

  • chaucer - duplex/two sided printing 7th floor

  • west - duplex/two sided printing west lab - UG network

  • inner - duplex/two sided printing inner/Hylan lab - UG network

Additional printing options that may be given on the command line include:
  • -o sides=one-sided - print one sided (duplex is default)

  • -o landscape - landscape printing (portrait is default)

  • -o number -up=2 - 2 up printing

  • -o number-up=4 - 4 up printing

  • -o page-range=1-4,8-9 - print page ranges (comma separated list)

  • There are many other options available. To learn more, visit http://www.cups.org/sum.html#STANDARD_OPTIONS. Not all of the documented options are supported by our printers, and some options are mutually exclusive (ie. n-up and landscape don't seem to work together).
