Who are we ?

We are a group of folks from the ECE and CS departments at the UofR who like to keep ourselves abreast of the latest happenings in computer architecture . We have a variety of interests spanning multi-core processors, VLSI design, concurrency, programming and energy aspects.

Typically, every fortnight (sometimes more often), one of our members leads the group through a discussion on a couple of papers that he/she feels the broader group might find useful. Recent topical interests have included papers from 3D die stacking, energy management in data centers, cache management in multi-core, hardware accelerators and optical interconnects. We then discuss the ideas (can ask questions at any point in the presentation), critique the paper and try to understand the overall scope of the paper.

All are welcome!

Helpful advice for preparing presentations

  • What is novel in the paper ? (Unless the field is new don't ramble on too long. For example, when talking about 3D caches, you don't need to start explaining about 3D stacking)
  • What is the implementation ? (Enough details to understand, but not so much that people lose interest. For example, with papers on coherence don't show me the coherence state machine on the slide, tell me what are the important additions)
  • Evaluation (Very important to describe their infrastructure)
  • Important to critique the paper (possible future extensions are as important as contributions)
  • Bonus points: If you can think of an extension that's publishable.

Meeting Time:

We meet on a bimonthly basis, every Wed. Meeting starts at 1:45. Typical meetings last ~90mins. Next meeting is Nov 4.
