How to Configure alpine to connect to O365 Email with IMAP

*WARNING:* We have been notified by University IT that alpine is not a supported Office365 Email client and that user's use alpine to connect to O365 email "at their own risk".

So alpine is certainly not a recommended mail client but google searches reveal plenty of other institutions that have been moved to the O365 cloud have some users successfully using alpine with O365 via IMAP. Attempts were made to test if alpine will work here in CS and the results that testing yielded the configuration settings below. There probably are other settings available. There really are much better alternatives for email than alpine but for those nostalgic types these represent a minimal set to allow you to use alpine.

Here are the settings you need in your ~/.pinerc file replace USERNAME with your Active Directory Username

smtp-server=smtp.office365.com/user=USERNAME@ur.rochester.edu

inbox-path={outlook.office365.com/ssl/user=USERNAME@ur.rochester.edu}Inbox

trash-folder={outlook.office365.com/ssl/user=USERNAME@ur.rochester.edu}Deleted Items

## customized-hdrs value will be used in the From: header
# AFTER the entire department is converted you should be able
# to use your @cs.rochester.edu address here but until that
# time you MUST use the @ur address or there will be an error when sending.
customized-hdrs= From:USERNAME@ur.rochester.edu
