Several people have asked me about using their office phones for things like speaker phone or conference calling. The following are some links and hints. Please feel free to edit this topic and add your own (or correct mine).
For student and other guides, see UIT website (first link).
To use your office phone as a speakerphone, press the "Speaker" button at the bottom-right of the phone. Its LED will light. If you are initiating a call, you should hear the dial tone and you can now dial normally. If you are answering an incoming call you should hear the caller. Hangup by pressing "Speaker" again. You can pickup the handset at any time to turn off the speakerphone. To resume speakerphone, press "Speaker" and hang up the handset.
For those interminable telecons, your microphone can be toggled on and off with the first triangular button at the top of the phone, labelled "Mic". This will be flashing when the mic is on, and steady when it's off. But since that's impossible to remember, use the fact that the red LED at the bottom right of the phone will be on when the mic is on.
Office Conference Calls
From the UTD manual for the office phones:
Up to eight parties can be included in a conference call. To Establish a Conference Call:
- With call in progress, ask party to hold.
- Press TRANSFER; receive interrupted dial tone and then dial desired number.
- After call is answered, press CONF; LED lights.
- Three-way conference call is now established.
Repeat steps to add more parties; up to eight parties may be included.
So far as I can tell, it is not possible with our phones to setup a conference call where multiple parties can call in themselves (as opposed to you calling and adding them).
For conference calls in the conference room, see below.
Conference Room Phone
Phone number for the conference room (CSB 703) is (585) 275-5329 (x5-5329 on campus).
Just like your office phone, dialing out from 703 requires "9" for a local call. And dialing toll calls (long distance, not toll-free 800/888) requires an access code.
For a conference call in 703 using the "spaceship" speakerphone, the following basic instructions are from Kai Shen via JoMarie Carpenter:
- Call first person, ask them to hold.
- Press FLASH
- Call next person, ask them to hold.
- Repeat 2 & 3 until everyone has been called.
- Press FLASH to bring everyone together.
Again, I believe it is not possible to setup a conference call where multiple parties can call in themselves (without using a service like ReadyConference
Outgoing Caller ID
Using the ANI feature on the University telephone system: When dialing a number external to the University, begin the dial sequence with a star ( * ). This will send your individual telephone number to the business or person that you are calling. An example: If your University extension is x51234, using the ANI feature, the number that the called party will see is 585-275-1234.
