If you decide to install shared software for the department, please look over the current guidelines for doing so.

Shared software installed in /usr/grads/

If you would like to install something and make it available to others:

  • build and install somewhere other than /usr/grads/ (space is limited)
    • use the --prefix option for configure scripts
    • make sure the program executes correctly without any special environment settings
  • put a link to the binaries and man pages in /usr/grads/{bin,man} with the version number appended
  • add it to the list here

Software currently installed in /usr/grads (likely incomplete):

Firefox2.02006-10-24posta web browser!
Emacs22.0.50.12006-09-07vandurmehead from cvs, binary is named emacs22
=vsound=0.52005-02-16vandurmevirtual audio loopback

Discussion

In case you were having problems getting Matlab to start up because of a glibc error, here's a simple workaround you should drop in your environment (via cshrc or similar):

# workaround to deal with Matlab crashing on startup

setenv MALLOC_CHECK_ 0
