CS254: Programming Language Design and Implementation

FALL 2011

Office hours: 2PM - 3PM on Tuesday and 11AM - 12PM on Friday, in the software lab

Research

My research experience is mostly in the area of programming language and the supporting systems.

Parallel Programming by Hints

Zhang, Ding, Kelsey, Bai, Gu, Feng [TR948]; Jacobs, Bai, Chen [TR952]; Ke, Liu, Zhang, Bai, Jacobs, Ding [OOSPLA11]

We propose BOP as a suggestion-based parallelization interface and runtime. BOP ensures sequential semantics and is designed to tolerate annotation errors with both correctness and performance guarantee.

Parallelism Potential Analysis and Profile-guided Parallelization Suggestion

Program Optimization by Suggestions

kelsey, Bai, Ding, Zhang [CGO09]

FastTrack is s a software system that uses specu- lation on extra processors on a multicore machine to enable unsafe optimization while guaranteeing correctness.

Adaptive Memory Management

Hertz, Kane, Keudel, Bai, Ding, Gu, Bard [ISMM11]

This work proposes a resource-based memory manager that enables multiple GC programs to adjust their memory demands automatically to fully utilize while not overstress the available physical memory. I also developed a kernel greenspace mechanism which adjusts system-wide memory usage by adapting memory reservation system to changing memory pressure.

Cache Sharing Modeling

Xiang, Bao, Bai, Ding, Chilimbi [PPOPP11]

A composible model for predicting cache inferference between programs on shared cache.

Program-level Cache Management

Gu, Bai, Gao, Zhang, Ding [LCPC08]

Optimal cache management with the support of cache bypassing instructions.

Program Locality Analysis

Gu, Christopher, Bai, Zhang, Ding [ISMM09]

Modeling program spatial locality through reuse distance analysis

Interleaved Hidden Markov Models

Modayil, Bai, Kautz [UbiComp08]

for recognizing multitasked activities.

Signature-based Software Transaction Scheduling

Bai, Shen, Zhang, Scherer, Ding, Scott [NGS07]

A key-based software transaction scheduling scheme to provide hints to the scheduler for better locality and fewer conflicts.
