Hangouts

Java's
- hot chocolate, dubious decor, noise, turkish coffee, tea, live jazz several days a week (check out Josh Rutner's quartet on Wednesdays!), poetry on Tue., pool table downstairs, tasty and healthy food for lunch, smoking room, etc, etc.
Where: 18 Gibbs St. (232-4820)
Hours: every day till Midnight (including Sunday!); until 1am on Fri&Sat!!
CiBon
- Java's upscale cousin (you get table service here!), and probably the only other coffee-shop in town with a smoking room. besides coffee, cakes, etc, there's also fancy beer, wine, champagne, and, for the hungry, very tasty panini and other mediterranian goodies. this is one rare place where you can actually carry on a conversation! if you go alone, there are some good magazines available.
Where: 688 Park Ave. (461-2960)
Hours: Su-Th: till 11pm, Fr-Sa: till 12pm
Moonbeans
- pot of tea, Blue Moon, artsy atmosphere, live music on Fri and Sat (jazz, new age, sometimes classical), poetry on Wed.
Where: 696 University Ave.
Hours: Thu-Sat: till Midnight, Sun-Wed: till 10pm
Le Jazz Hot Cafe
- white cloth tablecloths, fine food, bar, live jazz every night until late (call to find who's playing, don't trust the City).
Where: 135 W Commercial St., East Rochester (586-5690)
Hours: dinner: 6pm-11pm; bar & music: till 1-2am
The Little Cafe
- good food (including vegetarian) and cheap too, wine, desserts, espresso, live jazz a few days a week (check for my recommendations further down), (mostly bad) art exhibitions all the time.
Where: 240 East Ave. / 258-0413 / webpage
Hours: Sun-Thu: until 10pm; Fri&Sat: until midnight
The SPoT
- get parked, try some leaded stuff (or a virgin, if that's more to your liking) and enjoy the comfy couches and artsy decor; they also have good desert, and huge windows towards the street. Recently they started bringing live music, too.
Where: 200 East Ave (b/w the Little and Milestones)
Hours: everyday till Midnight (it appears that on week-ends they may be closing later)
