VW 1.6L diesel turbo

Garret turbocharger with integral waste gate as used in VW TD's. To the left is the intake air side, and to the right is the exhaust side.

Quantum TD manifolds

Manifold and turbo arrangement as used in VW longitudal engine installations (e.g. Quantum, Audi...). This arrangement also reportedly fits into the Vanagon without any engine mount modifications.

More detailed view also includes mounting brackets and hoses.

Brent's description of how to put a turbo on a naturally aspirated diesel in the VW vanagon. Another description, by G. Lee

Bob Bellanca swapped in a 1.9l TD engine in his Vanagon Westy.

Martin Schulte has put a 1,9 Liter TDI Motor in his Vanagon Martin's WWW site is in German. I made a short writeup in English of TD and TDI swaps.

Pictures of the TD engine I'm putting into my Westy.

Golf and Jetta TD manifolds

Manifold and turbo arrangement as used in VW transverse engine installations (e.g. Jetta, Golf...).

Caravelle and Transporter TD exhaust manifold

Helmut Zeidler in Germany sent me this drawing of the turbo manifold and exhaust piping from the European Transporter/Caravelle TD. (There was no TD engine option in the US). It looks like VW designed a special manifold for this application (1 in the picture), which mounts the turbo in front of the left motor mount.

Vanagon, Caravelle and Transporter D exhaust manifold

For comparison here is the exhaust arrangement in the naturally aspirated Vanagon/Transporter/Caravelle diesel.

VW 1.6L turbo diesel engine

The VW turbo diesel with the Golf/Jetta style manifolds.

Jetta installation

The same engine as installed in a Jetta '91 Eco Diesel. The Eco diesel has the turbocharger, but the injection pump lacks the boost pressure aneroid used in the regular TD. Instead maximum fuel delivery has been tuned down to stay below smoke levels at low boost.

The intake and exhaust is to the right in the picture, between the valve cover and the firewall. The turbo is occluded behind the brownish exhaust downpipe.
