Brandon CS Sanders, Research Assistant

Me

I just finished the Computer Science Ph.D. program at the University of Rochester and successfully defended August 1, 2005. My broad research interests include Computer Vision, Natural Language Understanding, and Machine Learning. Specifically I am interested in well-founded combinations of speech and vision for improved multi-modal interfaces.

My doctoral work builds a framework that enables an unsupervised machine to become spatially intelligent. The agent discovers perceptually grounded ideas of objects that are appropriate for the bootstrapping of perceptually grounded concepts of relationships between objects and actions involving objects. My specific problem is Object Discovery:

Given a set of observations, group all the observations stemming from a particular object without including other observations originating from different objects.

New Job!

I've recently joined the nonprofit IBESI and have committed to spend a year (unpaid if necessary) to make it happen. I really believe that the IBESI mission is huge and important, my skills are right, and the work is going to be super fun!

The accelerating pace at which technology reshapes our world has crowded us to a tipping point between two possible futures. In the bleak future innovations in communication and transportation make it easier to outsource your job. In the bright future the same technological advances hold the key to creating a better world for all of us --- a world of better work opportunities, better health, less poverty, and a cleaner environment. Which future we tip toward will depend upon who defines and controls the underlying research and development (R&D) projects that drive innovation.

In response to the urgency of this issue, professionals from various disciplines have established a nonprofit called IBESI. Our mission is to enable ordinary people to define, startup, and control R&D projects. We believe this greater democracy in the open marketplace will ensure that we tip toward the bright future.

During the last year we've assembled a team of experts in law, finance, public policy, economic development, social services, economics, technology and human factors to address issues such as new ways to invest, form legal entities, enforce commitments, and prevent free loaders.
