Chunqiang Tang

Welcome to Chunqiang's homepage! My first name could be pronounced as "choon-chyahn". I am a Ph.D. student at URCS since 1999. My advisor is Prof. Sandhya Dwarkadas. I also work closely with Prof. Michael L. Scott and DeQing (Luke) Chen. Before coming to Rochester, I graduated from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Institute of Computing Technology (ICT), Chinese Academy of Sciences with B.E. and M.E., respectively.

I am from Luzhou, Sichuan, P.R. China. My hometown locates besides the beautiful Yangzhi River and is known as the City of Wine due to its production of the famous Luzhou Lao Jiao since ancient time. Cultivated by the city's archaic wine taste, I love ancient culture, especially ancient history. My favorite books are "The Historical Records" ("Shi Ji"), written about 2,100 years ago, and "A Reference for Administration" ("Zi Zhi Tong Jian"), written about 915 years ago. One fascinating feature of the Chinese writing system is that, with a medium-level training, ordinary modern Chinese people can still read ancient Chinese manuscripts without much difficulty. At leisure time, I read "The History of The Twenty-Five Dynasties of China" ("Er Shi Wu Shi"), a major archive of Chinese history written by each generation of Chinese historians spanned over 2,000 years. While it still takes me perhaps several Ph.D. cycles to finish this archive, "The Cambridge History of China" series start to catch my attention. It is very interesting, and sometimes amusing, to compare the eastern and western description of the same history period side by side. When tired of reading, I usually go swimming or play squash. Playing Go game with Prof. Dana H. Ballard during lunch hour is always a joy, which helps me picking up skills forgotten since senior high.

For now, research is my full-time profession. My research interests include distributed shared state, peer-to-peer computing, computer networks, information retrieval, operating systems, and storage systems. My current focus is on InterWeave, eSearch, and pSearch. Please refer to my publications and Resume for more details.
