By planetary standards I’ve been extraordinarily lucky.  I’m white and American, both of which convey a significant amount of privilege in today’s world—none of which is earned, or fair.  I’ve been well loved by family and friends.  I got a good education in public schools, and was able to attend one of the world’s great public universities.  When I graduated I landed a great job here at the U of R.  I’ve been successful at it.  Heck, in the wake of our economic meltdown, the average person is lucky to have any job at all today.  And I’ve been paid enough that I’ve never really had to worry about money.
