INFORMATION FOR CSC 256/456

This page contains some information that students taking the CSC 256/456 course this semester may find helpful. Included in this page is information on how to contact me if you need help. I will also attempt to make the Handouts available online for those of you who need them and are not able to log on into the CS dept. servers for any reason. If you have any suggestions on how I can improve the contents of this page, please send me email.

News, Important Information, and Notices

To keep up with the class and events happening in CSC 256/456, you should regularly read the ur.cs456 newsgroup. You can do this by launching the news reader in your browser (Netscape for example) and then selecting the ur.cs456 newsgroup. Alternatively, you can just click on ur.cs456 newsgroup and Netscape will bring up all unread messages in the group. Or you can use any of the newsreader packages (like tin, trn, rn etc.) and subscribe to the ur.cs456 newsgroup. For more information on NachOS, go to The Berkeley NachOS site.

Handouts and Links

The following handouts are in postscript format. You can either view them by downloading to your area and using a postscript viewer like ghostview, or you can print the handouts. Reading them online is much preferred as it saves paper and conserves costs.

My Contact Information.

The best way to contact me is to send me email. I read my email at least twice every day so I will get your message. My email address is singhal@cs.rochester.edu but you can simply go to the bottom of this page and click on the mailbox icon and a mail window should pop up.

Office Hours

Day Hours
Mon 1:00-2:00pm
Wed 1:00-2:00pm

The above hours are my regular office hours. My office is in Room 626 of the Computer Studies Building. Here is a map of the campus highlighting the Computer Studies Building and locations of the computer labs. You can use any computer in any of the labs on this campus to log in remotely to your account here and do your work. This may be especially helpful if all the computers are full. If you would like remote access to the undergrad machines, please talk to Marty Guenther. You can send me email to fix an appointment if you cannot see during my regular office hours and need urgent help. If you need to contact me via phone, my office number is (716)275-8479.
