The focus of the course is the problem of quantifying the uncertainty that characterizes most inference outside of logic and mathematics. This is important to both philosophy and AI. The various probabilistic and non-probabilistic measures that have been proposed are explored and evaluated. Readings of various authors and lectures will provide the material. Class discussion, short homework papers, and a final paper will constitute the method. Students in this course may receive upper-level writing credit.
Students taking this course at the 400 level will be required to complete additional readings and/or assignments.
Prerequisite: PHL 110 or permission of instructor. (Fall (alternating with CSC219); cross-listed as PHL 217, and PHL 417.)
