ProposalThis independent study will consist of two main goals. The first of which is the installation and setup of an eight microphone array in the robotics lab. Installation of the proper drivers and interfacing with the microphones comprises the bulk of this stage. This is expected to take about a month if no unforeseeable problems arise. Once in place, I propose to move on to a research stage with the microphones. This second experimentation stage will involve feeding simple sound waves (such as the most basic sine wave) from a fixed (and known) location in the room and reading the waves from the eight microphones. By setting the appropriate delays on each microphone, corresponding to its distance from the 'speaker', my analysis will involve comparing noise ratios obtained from the array as compared to a single microphone reading the same wave. The hope is to create a method of getting cleaner readings from the array. The abridged goal of this study is to successfully setup and create a simple user's guide for the microphone array and to begin researching the use of microphone arrays in noise reduction. A technical manual on the hardware can be written for the department and if results are good, a research paper as well. Timeline
