Class meetings: TR 3:25-4:40 p.m., CSB 632 Attendance: Please let me know when you will have to be late or miss To be rescheduled: Thursdays, March 28 and April 4 (Possibilities: Sunday, March 24? Thursday, May 2?) (Friday, March 8, early, for midterm?) Assumed background: Any course in algorithm design and analysis, such as our CSC 282 from CLRS (http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=8570) Main text: Attiya & Welch (http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~hagit/DC/) Note errata and other courses (especially Herlihy's slides) Most likely main agenda: Preface's ``theory'' option (1-5, 14.3, 10, 15, 11, 18) (But welcome suggestions!) Later, maybe: Whatever we need from Lynch (http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/tds/distalgs.html) and CLR [sic--CLRS cut two of the chapters!] (http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=3440) for rest of Comps syllabus (see next page) What students do: Take midterm and final (= part of May 6 Comps?) (about 50%) HW exercises assigned from text or that arise Take turns helping Tao with the grading *and reporting* (selection after submission, perhaps at random) Learn (along with the rest of us) (Intangible--about 10%?) Undergraduates: Grading turns optional Certain HW optional or different HW collaboration rules: *Avoid* it, unless and until stuck. (But do request clarifications and hints in class!) If got stuck, then describe why. If then got help, describe it and its source (person, Lynch pages, URL, or whatever). Even *with* help, *explain* it rather than copy it; say explicitly how it overcame your particular difficulties.
