New Tournament Format

Based on the games so far, the players have been ranked and will now play each other in a single elimination tournament. The top seed gets a bye to the next round, and the remaining six play an elimination game to get to the next round. The four players in the next round (the semi-finals) will play each other (as earlier planned, with top seed playing the bottom seed and the other two playing against each other) and the winner of these games play in the finals. The finals will be the result of the best of three games.

Original Tournament Format

Every player in this competition will first play every other. The color that either player will have in each game will be decided upon by a randoms means, agreed upon by the two players, that gives both a 50 percent chance of playing white. Players will be awarded two points for a win and one point for a draw.

Based upon the rankings after the first round, the top four players will move into the second round. In the case of a two-way tie for the fourth place, the winner of the game between the two players in question will advance to the second round. If three or more players are tied for fourth place, then all concerned players will play off until a total ordering is established between them.

In the second (semi-final) round, the first seed will play against the fourth seed, and the second seed will play the third seed. In case there is a tie in these seedings, then this will be broken by an unbiased coin toss by the organizers. The winners of these two games will advance to the finals. In the case of a draw in either of these games, the two semi-finalists will continue to play each other until someone wins a game.

The finals will be the best of three games. Both finalists will play once as white. If one player wins both games, then they will automatically be the tournament champion. Otherwise, they will keep playing (with each player's color being selected by an unbiased coin toss) until one of the players wins two games. In case of any draws, the players will continue to play each other until a champion is established.

Tournament Rules

We will follow standard chess rules. For clarification on these rules, the players can refer to the FIDE website or the US Chess Federation site. The official rules for this tournament are those found at Gameknot, which are based on FIDE's Laws of Chess.

The time that can be spent on each move should be agreed upon by both players. In case of contention, the tournament rule is that in no case should more than five minutes be spent on a single move by a player. Games should be played in their entirety. If, however, *both* players agree to record the game and continue it at some later time this is alright too.
