My research interests fall into the broad areas of operating systems, distributed systems, and parallel computing. The overarching goal of my research is to understand the (normal and abnormal) behaviors of complex computer systems and to manage them according to such understanding. The empirical work of my research focuses on server computer systems including, in particular, I/O-intensive servers and multi-component network services. A prototype cluster-based middleware system developed in my research has been deployed at the search engine Ask.com, where the system hosts servers with thousands of processors.
