Research Experience
Sept. 2005 - present |
Research Assistant Studied the coordination of hand and eye movements and built a computational model for anticipatory eye movements in human-object interactions. Designed and conducted human experiments, and constructed a data-driven model based on working memory decay and anticipated object reference orders. |
Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Palo Alto, CA |
May 2005 - Aug. 2005 |
Summer Intern Worked in Ubiquitous Computing Area of Computer Science Lab on automatic recognition of conversational floors and behavior modeling in computer mediated conversations. Collaborated closely with sociologists and computer scientists to study acoustic, prosodic and lexical characteristics as well as timing characteristics of multi-user social conversations. Designed and implemented computational models to detect various key features in conversation modeling. |
University of Rochester, Rochester, NY |
Jan. 2005 - May 2005 |
Research Assistant Investigated computational modeling of subtask recognition and planning in natural tasks. Designed and conducted human experiments. Proposed and implemented a general framework for automatic subtask identification and a probabilistic model of subtask scheduling. |
University of Rochester, Rochester, NY |
Dec. 2003 - Dec. 2004 |
Research Assistant Implemented the Visual Routines model and developed a complete virtual human vision system with script-controlled behavior. Identified a set of basic cognitive primitives for human-object interaction and designed a language to program the behaviors of a graphical human figure in virtual reality. |
University of Rochester, Rochester, NY |
Jan. 2003 - Dec. 2003 |
Research Assistant Developed a humanoid avatar with basic real-time vision in virtual reality, on a distributed platform using high speed FPGA chips. Augmented a commercial human simulation software package with binocular vision and biologically realistic eye movements. Designed FPGA circuits to implement steerable filters which enable real time iconic visual search. |

Research Assistant Investigated the application of fractal theory and evolutionary computation in automatic generation and optimization of fuzzy control systems. Applied cooperative coevolution in a novel way. Studied the encoding of fuzzy membership functions, explored various genetic operators, and fine-tuned fitness functions with my colleague. Achieved the world best result in the classification of the standard IRIS data set. |
