Applications (new versions or package changes)

firefox 3 web browser

Fedora 9 includes the new Firefox 3 web browser. Be aware some extensions for Firefox version 2 will not work if they haven't been ported up to the new version by the author. Also in testing I eventually developed a problem with extensions updating properly. After an update was found and "installed" the restart did not actually perform the update and the extension was left disabled. Even uninstalling failed. It didn't happen for all extensions installed but it was more than one and I verified these were Firefox 3 compatible. Manually removing the extensions directory ~/.mozilla/firefox/defaultXXX/extensions and then installing all new extensions (add-ons) seemed to solve the problem. So, there may be an issue with updating some extensions installed before the Firefox 3 upgrade. Manual removal of the extensions directory in your profile directory seems to do the trick.

pine replaced by alpine
Alpine is the successor to Pine and was developed by Computing & Communications at the University of Washington. Alpine should look and feel pretty much exactly like Pine save for the fact you type alpine to launch it rather than pine.
