FAQ for CS Account Holders

Q: How do I change my password?
A: Login to any machine and type the command passwd. Your new password will be immediately available on all department hosts.

Q: When I log in for the first time the system prompts me to change my password but it doesn't work. What do I do ?
A: The reason most people have this problem is due the system expecting you to enter your temporary password (that you logged in with) again BEFORE you type your new password twice. Please see ForcedChangePasswordInstructions

Q: How do I change my default shell?
Login to master.cs.rochester.edu and type chsh (Instructional network account holders use master.csug.rochester.edu). Current valid shells are "/bin/sh", "/bin/bash", "/bin/csh", and "/bin/tcsh". Updates are generally distributed to all machines by the following morning.

Q: Does CS have a Wiki?
A: Yes. http://www.cs.rochester.edu/twiki

Q: How do I acquire permission to post in the Wiki?
Register @ http://www.cs.rochester.edu/twiki/bin/view/TWiki/TWikiRegistration Once your registration is approved (usually within a day or so) you can post in the Wiki. Usually this is only necessary for staff or Graduate students posting research related content. The wiki is publicly viewable for reference without registering.

Q: Where can I find the location of my web home page files?
Web home page files are mounted at /u/www/u/USERNAME where USERNAME is your login username. This directory should be accessible from any CS host.

Email labstaff@cs.rochester.edu or stop by a staff members office.

http://www.cs.rochester.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/CsGuide online documentation for the CS Department.
