University of Rochester and George Eastman House present the Cincinnati Waterfront Dataset

NEW: Read about this work in the August 2010 Issue of Wired Magazine. Link.

This is plate 4 of the Cincinnati Waterfront Panorama Daguerreotype, taken by Charles Fontayne and William S. Porter in 1848. The plate is property of Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, and was scanned using visible-light microscopy at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY.

Here's a zoom illustrating the extraordinary level of detail in a daguerreotype:

This dataset is available in a large zip file here. It's 4295 Megabytes. If you have trouble downloading it, let us know, and we'll break it up into smaller pieces or scp it to you directly.

You let us know, and we've broken it into 7 smaller pieces:

  1. Part 1
  2. Part 2
  3. Part 3
  4. Part 4
  5. Part 5
  6. Part 6
  7. Part 7

We also have high resolution (~180 megabytes) stitched images of the whole plate here, or images of the Top-Left, Top-Right, Bottom-Left, and Bottom-Right quadrants.
