URCS Alumni Bryan Lyles and Ricardo Bianchini named ACM Fellows

The Association for Computing Machinery, the leading professional organization for computer science, has named 53 of its members as ACM Fellows — its highest honorary class of membership.  Among those named are URCS Ph.D. alumni Bryan Lyles (’83) and Ricardo Bianchini (’95).  Lyles, who did his thesis work with Jerry Feldman, currently serves as a Research and Development Manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  He was cited “For contributions to Internet infrastructure technology, measurement and research.”  Bianchini, who did his thesis work with Tom LeBlanc, currently serves as Chief Efficiency Strategist at Microsoft.  He was cited “For contributions to power, energy and thermal management of servers and datacenters.”  Further information can be found in the ACM press release.

Jiebo Luo issued US Patent UR 6-14017 "Computer Vision Based Method and System for Evaluating and Grading Surgical Procedures"

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires that each ophthalmology residency training program provides a wet laboratory for residents to prepare intraocular surgery prior to live human surgery. Training residents in cataract surgery has been a challenge for residency programs as a result of several factors: 1. Surgery is usually performed on an awake patient. 2. Wet lab facilities are underfunded. 3. Faculties are not funded for teaching. 4. Lack of high-fidelity, low-cost simulation models.

Ehsan Hoque named an MIT ‘Innovator under 35’

The editors of MIT Technology Review have named Hoque one of this year’s “innovators under 35”—an  honor that has previously gone to the likes of  Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the cofounders of Google; Mark Zuckerberg, the cofounder of Facebook; and Jonathan Ive, the chief designer of Apple.

Coherence Protocol Patent Awarded

Sandhya Dwarkadas and former students, Arrvindh Shriraman (currently on the faculty at Simon Fraser) and Hongzhou Zhao (currently at NVidia), were issued US patent#9,411,733 on August 9th, 2016, for their invention "Sharing Pattern-Based Directory Coherence for Multicore Scalability (SPACE)".

ROCSpeak: Using machine learning analysis to help people improve communication skills

Researchers in our Rochester Human Computer Interaction Group, led by Professor M. Ehsan Hoque, have developed a tool called ROCSpeak to help people improve their communication skills. ROCSpeak uses cloud-based technology to allow users to upload a video of themselves speaking and generates semi-automated feedback to provide suggestions for improvement. ROCSpeak built on the RocHCI group's previous creation, My Automated Conversation coacH (MACH).
