Morceli Sets a Third Record

Nourredine Morceli of Algeria now holds the world record in three events after winning the 3,000 meters in 7 minutes 25.11 seconds tonight at a Grand Prix meet.

Morceli's time was 3.85 seconds faster than Moses Kiptanui's time of 7:28.96 on Aug. 16, 1992, in Cologne, Germany. "I've hungered for this since last year," said Morceli, 24.

He set world records in the mile, at 3:44.39, and the 1,500 meter at 3:28.82. He was the 1,500 world champion in 1991 and 1993 and has dominated middle-distance events.

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in Spain, Morceli finished seventh in the 1,500 when he was boxed in and was unable to get clear in the final lap. The gold medal won by Fermin Cacho of Spain.
